Three-Month Progress Report

On January 12th at 5:22 local time a series of earthquakes with magnitude 6.6 to 7.3 struck Haiti in the highly populated area of Department Ouest.  The earthquakes hit 10 miles from the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince.  Over 3 million people reside in Department Ouest with 1 million of those living in Port-au-Prince.  Current media reports indicate collapsed buildings including hospitals and government buildings.  As is typical in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake, the full extent of damage is unknown at this time.  However, as with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

The American Red Cross is responding to this disaster, and will be working with Red Cross partners in Haiti and with the international Federation of Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies.  The response of the American Red Cross includes:

How do I make a financial contribution to those affected?

You can help the victims of countless crises around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. Donations can be sent to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013, or made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at www.redcross.org.

You can also donate by texting "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts.  The donation is an automatic $10 donation and will show up on your cell phone bill.
